There are some familiar classic classic-cars that people have seen during downtown evets in downtown Gustine and Newman. That would be Westside Auto Club, a club that makes great strides to ensure their communities are taken care of. They’re more than a club.

The 75-year-old club made donations to food banks and local grocery stores during the holidays. During the month of December, WSA made donations to Nob Hill Foods in Newman under the program Food for Families. Achieving 60 bags of groceries that would go towards food banks, providing support to individuals and families in need. A donation was also made to Shrine of Our Lady of Miracles, Agape Food Pantry, in Gustine.

“I we wish we could do more,” said 22-year serving club president Don Gomes. “There’s not a lot of things to donate to, whenever something comes up, we hear somebody that says, you know, relieve distress or in of need money. We try to help them out.”

WSA will makes great efforts to raise money during the year. Starting with car shows around May that initiates funds. Furthermore, they offer a scholarship program that will go to local schools such as Gustine, Newman, Patterson and Hilmar High.

“They (WSA members) had fun doing it. Donating bikes and different funds. It’s just a charity event that we’ve been doing for years and all the charities here,” Gomes commented.

Nearing the holidays, WSA will begin donating toys, in late November to Toys for Tots. Lastly, during December the WSA will prepare to donateraised funds towards food banks, food pantries and food drives.

“We’re trying to support the towns of Newman, Gustine, Patterson and Hilmar. It really does feels good,” Gomes continued.

Their community support is what drives the club. The great thing is that they get to do it all over again for the next season. Don Gomes wants to keep new members involved and participating for their city. A great tradition that will better serve those in need.
