Gustine welcome Hawks in SAL finale

GUSTINE - One more Southern Athletic League game remains on the schedule for the Gustine High School football team.

Then after that game, the Reds will shift their focus toward a potential bowl game berth.

But right now, Gustine (1-5 in the SAL, 1-8 overall) is preparing for the regular season finale against Delhi (0-6 in the SAL, 0-9). The game at Gustine High School Field is scheduled to start this Friday at 7 p.m.

Gustine head coach Collin Lane has been impressed with the Hawks’ flight on offense, despite its winless record.

“Delhi does a great job on offense controlling the clock,” said Lane, “and puts a lot of pressure on you to play perfect because they have the ability to drain the clock and limit your opportunities to score.”

The Hawks have lost most of their games, in league and non-league, by three or more touchdowns this season.

Gustine is looking to bounce back from its tough 21-14 loss to Stone Ridge Christian High on Friday.

“I do think that we will carry over our momentum into this week,” Lane said. “We are a very young squad, so I am hoping to build some consistency in this last game.”

While the regular season comes to an end this Friday, win or lose, the Reds will most likely be playing in a bowl game.

The Sac-Joaquin Section started holding bowl games after the 2025 season for high school football teams that missed earning a playoff berth. Teams that have at least one win, to play in a bowl game.

But Lane, his coaching staff and their players are focused on preparing for the Hawks.

“We are trying to focus as much as we can this week on Delhi because they always play us very tough,” Lane said.
