GUSTINE — High school football returned to the Westside as the Gustine High School Reds launched their 2026 campaign by hosting a multi‑team preseason scrimmage featuring Delhi, Golden Sierra, Mariposa, Stone Ridge, Ripon Christian, Big Valley Christian and Bret Harte.

The showcase offered coaches a valuable first look at their squads under live, game‑speed conditions, highlighting early strengths while revealing areas needing refinement.

Gustine’s defense opened against Golden Sierra, where the front seven set a physical tone and clogged interior running lanes. But early miscommunication in the secondary proved costly, leading to two Golden Sierra passing touchdowns — one on a tight red‑zone throw and another on a long post route.

The Reds later faced Bret Harte and again surrendered two early passing scores before settling in. That defensive stretch helped spark the offense, which responded with a promising drive led by quarterback No. 2 and powered by tough downhill runs before an incompletion stalled the series.

Gustine continued to build consistency in later rotations. Against Big Valley Christian and Delhi, the Reds worked to establish more cohesive blocking against aggressive fronts. In a second matchup with Bret Harte, the defense tightened up, allowing just one score and shutting down the run game to close out the day.

With film now in hand, Gustine shifts its focus to one of the region’s most storied rivalries. The Reds host Orestimba on Friday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. for the annual Battle for the Chief — the four‑mile showdown for the iconic five‑foot wooden trophy. The matchup promises high emotion as Gustine looks to claim early bragging rights on its home field.
