Orestimba Warriors girls’ basketball 15-game win streak game to an unfortunate end in their game against Colfax.
The Warriors made their way into the playoffs by winning a play-in game versus Argonaut on Feb. 12, 50-49. But their Division 4 CIF SJS playoff run would come to an early stop after falling to Colfax on Tuesday, 77-28.
“The game at Argonaut was exciting,” commented head coach Scott Felber. “We jumped out to a quick lead and played good defense throughout. The girls did a great job. Argonaut hit some shots down the stretch, but we were able to hold them off and come away with the win.”
Their play-in game win was crucial. If they lost, their playoff run would have been cut short without having a chance to compete in the first round. But the Warriors were able to win a hard-fought game. Leading the way in scoring that night was Jenessa Gonzalez (5) with 18-points total and five 3-pointers.
“Colfax was tough, they are a fast team, and they finish well at the basket. We challenged them early, but we just weren’t able to
keep up,” said Felber.
The powerhouse team was able to pull away from the Warriors. Colfax came into the first round with a record of 27-2, 6-game win streak, and 13-1 record in the Pioneer Valley league. With an end score of 77-29, their match was met, and Colfax was able to proceed to the second round of playoffs on Thursday. Colfax defeated Amador High School 59-24 in the second round, 59-24. The Warriors lost, but to a dominating team.
“The girls put in a lot of hard work,” Felber mentioned. ”A lot of people thought that Orestimba was going to take a step back after losing our key seniors from last year. The girls took that to heart, and it was fun watching them prove people wrong. They got 20 wins, including a road playoff game. Couldn’t be prouder of them.”
The Warriors accomplished winning five consecutive Southern League titles and making it into the first round of Division 4 CIF SJS playoffs. The team was tired after playing back-to-back games for a section title. Coach Felber looks forward to next season and will hopefully make it farther into the playoffs. The great thing about sports is there’s always next season.
