Orestimba Softball only had one matchup on Tuesday and they made sure to leave with a W.
The Orestimba Warriors girls’ softball shutout the Golden Valley Cougars, 10-0. It was a non-conference matchup, but the girls played like it was. The Warrior progressed their record to 6-3 as the Warriors as they head into Southern Athletic League games this week and look to stay healthy.
“What we were looking for today was getting some hits,” said head coach Joaquin Marroquin. “We got at least eight or nine hits in this game, which we’ve been kind of hurting in our last few.”
The Warriors came out to win at home, nothing else. Their goals were to make sure they were sending balls into the outfield and making plays. The Warriors would have a total of 35 plate appearances versus the Cougars’ 24. This set up the Warriors for more opportunities to score. In total, the team had nine total runs batted in, leading a batting average of .346. Lexi Alves (25), Mariah Avila (33), led the Warriors in runs with two each.
Hailey Starr (42) lead the Warriors at the pitching mound. Starr is recovering from a recent injury in their loss against Pacific Grove on March 8. But she was able to make an appearance against Golden Valley on Tuesday.
“We’re just starting league,” commented Marroquin. “This is only our ninth game, and we have 19 more games plus playoffs. We already are dealing with three injuries right now. But fortunately, we’ve got 20 on the roster, but every player counts for us, so we want to make sure everyone is healthy.”
Starr’s injury looked like it never happened. Starr totaled 79 pitches and six strikeouts. Vanessa Millan (8) accounted for six pitches at the mound.
This week, the Warriors will officially start league. On Monday, the Warriors will travel to Delhi at 4 p.m. Then the Warriors will host Ripon Christian at home, starting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
