NEWMAN — Families and community members will gather at Hills Ferry Cemetery on Nov. 2 for a special All Souls’ Day service honoring and remembering loved ones who have died.

The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, and will be led by priests from Our Lady of Miracles Catholic Church in Gustine and St. Joachim Catholic Church in Newman.

Following the service, priests will remain at the cemetery to bless the graves of departed family members and friends.

All Souls’ Day, observed annually on Nov. 2 in the Catholic Church, is dedicated to praying for the faithful departed and remembering those who have passed away. The observance follows All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1 and is marked in many communities by cemetery visits, prayers and memorial traditions honoring deceased loved ones.

Local families often decorate graves with flowers and other tributes in preparation for the observance. Cemetery officials announced that the final lawn mowing before the holiday will take place Oct. 30, with mowing suspended until the second week of November to allow visitors more time to display decorations, including marigolds, a flower traditionally associated with remembrance during the season.

Organizers encourage members of the public to attend the service and take part in the annual tradition of prayer and remembrance.

The event is open to the community.
