GUSTINE — Families, community members and Westside leaders gathered in Gustine to celebrate a major milestone for the Gustine Traveling Library, which marked the giveaway of its 350,000th free book to youth. The event drew a strong turnout to the organization’s headquarters, where children took part in crafts and activities while supporters reflected on the reach of the library’s literacy mission. Assemblyman Juan Alanis was among those attending, joining local advocates in recognizing the program’s growing impact.
What began as a small local effort to support young readers has expanded far beyond the Westside. The Gustine Traveling Library has now distributed books not only across California, but also in Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Illinois. Despite that wider reach, organizers say the heart of the mission remains rooted in youth literacy, supporting educators and ensuring families have access to books and encouragement.
Founder Zachery Ramos said the milestone represents more than a number. “Every book we have given away has carried with it the chance to make a connection, support a family, and remind a child that their future matters,” Ramos said. He added that the relationships built with families and the trust earned in the community are central to the organization’s work. “This has always been about opening doors for kids and letting families know they are not alone.”
Vice President Jose Flores said the celebration also honored the many people who have contributed to the mission. “Reaching 350,000 books shows what can happen when a community comes together with heart and purpose,” Flores said. “Families, volunteers and supporters have all played a part in helping us reach this moment.”
Board member and community organizer James Rubio said the milestone reflects more than literacy alone. “This is about building hope, creating opportunity, and showing families that there are people who care deeply about their children and their future,” Rubio said.
The celebration served as both a reflection on how far the organization has come and a reminder that its mission continues to grow — one child, one family and one book at a time.
