NEWMAN — A 30‑year‑old Van Nuys man was killed Saturday morning in a rollover crash on Interstate 5 north of Stuhr Road, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash was reported around 10:40 a.m. April 25. When officers arrived, they found a red 2004 Ford SUV overturned on its roof on the southbound shoulder and right lane.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending next of kin notification. His passenger, Angela Quiroga, 32, of Van Nuys, was extricated by emergency crews and flown by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center with major injuries. CHP said both occupants were wearing seat belts.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Ford had been traveling northbound when, for unknown reasons, the driver veered left into the center median and lost control. The SUV overturned, crossed into the southbound lanes and came to rest on its roof.
Traffic control was in place for about two hours, causing delays while officers investigated.
CHP said it is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
