NEWMAN — Hills Ferry Cemetery officials are asking visitors to stop leaving unsanitary items on the property after workers discovered two deposits of what appeared to be either animal remains or spoiled meat in the past week in the cemetery’s older section.
The most recent item was found at the far west end of the cemetery, according to staff. After reviewing the area, officials said the activity appears isolated to an older burial site and does not involve anyone buried at the cemetery within the last 30 years.
In a public notice, cemetery staff said the materials — whether intended as offerings, messages or part of a personal tradition — disrupt the peaceful atmosphere and create health concerns for visitors and workers.
“We understand that traditions and practices can vary widely, but it is crucial to remember that our actions can impact the tranquility and sanctity of this ground,” the notice said.
Officials said they are aware that some people may be attempting to leave messages or seek help from deceased relatives, but emphasized that the practice is inappropriate for the cemetery and unfair to others who must encounter the sight and smell. Workers also noted that their role is to maintain the grounds, not clean up after visitors.
Cemetery staff said anyone caught leaving such items will be asked not to return.
The cemetery is urging the public to respect its rules and help preserve the site as a place of peace and remembrance. Staff said they hope the reminder will prevent future incidents and maintain the dignity of the historic grounds.
