RIVERBANK — In a defensive slugfest that went down to the final seconds, the Riverbank Bruins held off the Gustine Reds 7-6 on Friday night, surviving a flurry of turnovers, penalties and late-game drama to remain unbeaten.
Riverbank opened the night with a surprise onside kick, but Gustine’s #62 Jack Swafford pounced on it to give the Reds early momentum. Quarterback Adrian Campos pushed the drive forward with consecutive carries and drew a Bruins offsides penalty on fourth-and-two. But when Gustine faced another fourth down, Riverbank’s defense came up with a stop on a pass attempt, turning the ball over.
Neither team found rhythm early. Gustine’s defense forced a Bruins punt, but the Reds—pinned inside their own 10—were soon punting it back. On Riverbank’s next snap, Gustine’s #72 Crue Correa recovered a fumble, sending the game into the second quarter tied 0-0.
The physical tone continued. Campos was sacked on a fourth-down try, but Gustine’s defense answered again, highlighted by a big backfield sack from #65 Justin Lopes. After #2 Eric Navarro hauled in a key first-down catch, a Reds punt led to a muffed fair catch by Riverbank, pinning the Bruins deep. Riverbank escaped danger and punted with 46 seconds left in the half. Gustine tried to capitalize from the Bruins’ 40, but a Riverbank interception with 12 seconds remaining kept the game scoreless at halftime.
Riverbank wasted no time breaking through. On the first drive of the third quarter, the Bruins ripped off a 65-yard touchdown run and added the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Gustine’s response was derailed by penalties and another Riverbank interception at the Reds’ 35. The Bruins threatened again before a false start on fourth-and-three forced a punt.
The Reds leaned on their ground game to climb back. A fourth-and-one pitch to #20 Emmanuel Rodriguez moved the chains, followed by a 12-yard burst from #6 Juan Aguilar. Aguilar later appeared to score, but a holding penalty wiped out the touchdown. Campos kept the drive alive with a keeper, and #22 Avery Ethridge added five yards before the third quarter ended with Riverbank still ahead 7-0.
Gustine finally broke through early in the fourth. Facing fourth-and-10 at the Riverbank 25, Campos fired a strike to Rodriguez for a touchdown. The missed extra point left Riverbank clinging to a 7-6 lead.
A penalty on the kickoff set Riverbank up at midfield, and the Bruins marched to the Gustine 8 before the Reds delivered a goal-line stand. Riverbank lined up for a field goal, but Gustine blocked it with 7:21 remaining.
Pinned at their own 9, the Reds went four-and-out, but a personal foul on the punt gave Gustine new life at the Bruins’ 30. Runs by Aguilar and Ethridge set up another fourth-down attempt, but Riverbank held firm.
With time running out, Riverbank took over at its own 35, only for Gustine’s #50 Jeff Camera to recover a Bruins fumble. The Reds drove into striking distance as the final seconds ticked away. With eight seconds left, Gustine launched a final pass, but Riverbank intercepted it to seal the 7-6 victory.
The Reds (0-2) travel to Modesto on Friday to face the Big Valley Grace Lions (2-0). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
