Reds battle Broncos in nonleague contest

GUSTINE, CA — The Gustine Reds varsity volleyball team hosted the Dos Palos Broncos for an energetic non-league matchup. Led by Head Coach Laupua, the Reds fought through three competitive sets, displaying strong flashes of resilience despite ultimate victories by the visiting Broncos.

Set 1: Dos Palos 25, Gustine 23

Gustine struck early, taking a 2-0 advantage before Dos Palos answered with three straight points. The Reds immediately countered with a high-energy 5-point rally, driving their lead to 12-8. The visiting Broncos responded with a surge of their own to edge ahead 14-13. Gustine surged back to command a 19-16 advantage and held strong late at 22-21. However, Dos Palos tied the game at 22-22 and reached game point at 24-23, holding off a final Gustine push to claim the opening set.

Set 2: Dos Palos 25, Gustine 14

The Broncos established early control in the second set, establishing a 4-2 lead and holding momentum up to a 12-8 cushion. The Reds showed strong signs of life in the middle stretch, battling to close the margin to 18-12. Dos Palos proved too consistent down the stretch, stretching their lead to 21-13 before closing out the set.

Set 3: Dos Palos 25, Gustine 18

A furious back-and-forth rally opened the third set before a Bronco kill broke the silence and sparked a 5-0 run. After Dos Palos extended their lead to 7-0 and 10-2, Gustine refused to back down. Demonstrating relentless grit, the Reds mounted a steady comeback to trim the deficit to 16-13. Dos Palos ultimately pulled away in the final points to complete the sweep.

The Reds faced the 4-2 Livingston wolves on Tuesday.
