As the season comes to a near end, Orestimba High track and field sophomore Israel Ramirez and senior Marian Quevedo competed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Championships Finals last Saturday at Folsom High School.
Ramirez finished in third place in the men’s 110-meter hurdles after he clocked in 14.78 seconds. Quevedo ran a time of 46.76 seconds in the women’s 300-meter hurdles to finish in eighth place.
Co-head coach Charlie Kothenbeutel said the meet was a “nice little culmination” for both athletes who made their mark in the program’s record books this season.
“For Israel [Ramirez], he was seeded as the fifth-fastest time going in, but finished third,” Kothenbeutel said.
With the placement, Ramirez qualified for the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High School in Clovis High School. While Quevedo will be stepping on the podium for graduation on Friday, she, alongside Ramirez, will travel to Eugene, Ore. next month to compete in the Nike Outdoor Nationals from June 18 to June 22.
The two athletes are the first in program history to qualify for the meet, Kothenbeutel said.
“These kids have worked so incredibly hard,” he said. “In an event like the 100-meter hurdles or 110-meter hurdles, [it] just requires so much attention to detail in your croft.”
