SAL league rivals Orestimba and Gustine girls soccer teams once again collided on the pitch. The Warriors blanked the Reds 2-0 on Thursday to advance 14-2-2 for the season, ranking 1st in the Southern League with a record of 9-0.
“Taking care of business,” said head coach Alex Avila of the win. “We have five games left in the league, three games from tomorrow to next Tuesday.”
Maya Barajas (2) led the team in the Warriors’ only scores for the night.
“We always expect to win in these. You don’t want to go into the game not thinking we’re going to win,” said Avila.
Avila also has confidence in his defense. It shows in the numbers too. Mariah Avila (0) had a total of 14 saves for the night, showing that the Reds were attacking the goal, but unable to score.
“We mentioned rematches in such a short period of time, you don’t take anything for granted. We did try to throw a few, you know, different wrinkles at them,” said Avila.
The Warriors still have business to take care of. This week the Warriors hosted Denair on Tuesday. Then the Waterford Wildcats come to Orestimba at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Gustine traveled to Le Grand on Tuesday and then will host Mariposa County on Thursday.
