GUSTINE — The Gustine Reds Youth Football and Cheer program has canceled its 2026 season after weeks of struggling to recruit enough players and losing additional families amid what organizers say was misinformation circulating on social media.
All statements from the program were posted by board member Elizabeth Williams on Facebook, where she announced that the season could not move forward.
“We are beyond saddened to announce the cancellation of the 2026 season,” Williams wrote. She said the decision followed “the small town rumor mill and too many families choosing to leave our teams without coming to us for clarity,” adding that the athletes who remained committed to the program would feel the greatest impact.
The program had publicly warned earlier that it was short two players for Jr. Novice and six for Jr. Varsity — gaps that left the league prepared to force a forfeit if numbers didn’t improve. Up until a few days before the cancellation, Williams said the board was still actively trying to recruit enough players to field full teams.
In her posts, Williams emphasized that the loss extends beyond sports, saying football and cheer provide structure, friendships and community involvement for local youth. “This is more than just football and cheer — it is time, memories, friendships, and opportunities being taken away from children who simply wanted to participate,” she wrote.
She also noted that some families told her their children did not plan to play in high school, which reduced interest at the youth level. Gustine High School has struggled with participation in recent years, at times moving underclassmen up to varsity to fill football rosters and recently going without a varsity boys basketball team due to low turnout.
The program will issue refunds to families who already paid registration fees and encouraged parents to seek opportunities with nearby youth football and cheer organizations.
Despite the setback, Williams said the board intends to rebuild. “Although this season didn’t go as hoped, our hearts are still with this program,” she wrote. “We fully intend to return next year and once again give it our all.”
