Newman Police Department

The Newman Police Department received 71 calls for service and reported 85 officer-initiated calls for a total of 156 incidents from May 15 to May 21.

The department opened 17 cases and made six arrests, including three for being unlicensed drivers.

The department issued nine traffic citations, one criminal citation and one parking citation. One vehicle was towed.

Burglary

Police are investigating a residential burglary reported May 17 in the 600 block of Waxwing Street, where jewelry, expensive perfume and cologne, and cash were taken from a home.

The total loss was estimated at $9,550, according to the report. No additional details were released, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Suspected DUI

A 28‑year‑old Gustine man was cited after police say he failed field sobriety tests and registered a blood‑alcohol level of 0.09% during a traffic stop for expired registration.

Officers pulled over a vehicle driven by Pedro Serna Salazar on Highway 33 and Canal School Road, according to the report. Police said they saw two open containers of Modelo beer on the driver’s floorboard and that Serna Salazar told officers he had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening after work.

He reportedly failed field sobriety tests before providing a breath sample showing a 0.09% blood‑alcohol level. Serna Salazar was cited and released to a responsible party, and the vehicle was towed, police said.

Arrests

Mohamed Rashed, 56, of Newman was arrested on May 15 for disorderly conduct.

Pedro Serna Salazar, 28, of Gustine was arrested on May 20 for DUI and DUI of .08 or more.

Gustine Police Department

The Gustine Police Department handled a series of calls between May 15 and May 21, including an assault, a DUI arrest and a vandalism report, according to weekly activity logs.

Officers responded May 19 to a report of a suspicious vehicle near Sullivan Road and West Avenue. The call came in at 7:03 a.m. and was cleared about 50 minutes later.

On May 16, police were dispatched to the 900 block of Linden Avenue for an assault reported at 9:42 a.m. Officers completed the investigation within an hour.

A vandalism case was reported May 15 at the Ed Peterson Shelter on the 700 block of Linden Avenue. The incident, classified as misdemeanor vandalism under state law, was logged at 9:23 a.m.

Later that evening, at 9:08 p.m., officers investigated a DUI case at North Avenue and Linden Avenue. The driver was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence, according to the report.

No additional details were released.

Arrests

Jose David Ortiz Jr., 25, was arrested at 9:34 p.m. May 15 in the area of North and Linden avenues for 23152(a) VC DUI alcohol, 23152(b) VC DUI alcohol/0.08 percent, and 23154(a) VC driving with a blood‑alcohol level of .01 or more while on probation.

Gustine Fire Department

The Gustine Fire Department responded to 9 calls for service from May 18 to May 21. The calls included four for Emergency Medical Services, one public assist, three vegetation fires, one commercial vehicle fire and one debris fire.

Newman Fire Department

The Newman Fire Department responded to 13 calls for service from May 14 to May 20. The calls included six Emergency Medical Services, two public assists, one vehicle collision, one fire call, one wire down call, one fire alarm call and one working structure fire call.

On May 14 at 3”04 p.m., the Newman Station was dispatched for a vehicle versus a pedestrian in the area of Yolo Road and S Street. On arrival, the crew found a patient with minor injuries. The patient was treated and transported to a local hospital.

On May 15, at 11:30 a.m., the Newman Station was dispatched as mutual aid to a vegetation fire in the area of Eastin Road and Pump Road. The fire crew was assigned to fire attack on the southern end of the fire. The fire crew worked diligently with multiple agencies to extinguish the fire. The extent of the damage is unknown, and there were no injuries to report.

On May 17, at 2:13 p.m., the Newman Station was dispatched for a wire down call in the area of Inyo Avenue and S Street. On arrival, the fire crews found one tree down with a wire beneath it. The fire crews requested PG&E and waited for them to arrive. Once PG&E arrived on scene, the fire crews cleared.

On May 20, at 11:01 p.m., the Newman Station was dispatched for a working structure fire in the area of Lady Slipper Lane and Bunting Lane. On arrival, the fire crews found a single-story residence with occupants outside and nothing showing. The fire crews investigated and found that the HVAC unit motor was seized and smoking. The fire crews isolated and extinguished the threat, then turned the incident over to the occupants. The fire crews advised the occupants to contact a service professional for repairs. The damages were estimated at $1,000, and there were no injuries to report.
