For the Silveira family, frog jumping is more than a competition. It is a family tradition, a hometown legacy and a piece of Gustine history that has continued for 68 years.
This year, the Gustine Frog Team once again represented the community at the Calaveras County Frog Jumping Jubilee in Angels Camp — and came home with another win. The longtime family team added a new chapter to a tradition that has carried the Silveira name, and the name of Gustine, onto one of California’s most unique stages.
“Your one and only Gustine Frog Team won again this year,” Dustin Silveira said. “My aunt Lillian jumped a big one and swept it in the finals.”
The Calaveras County Frog Jumping Jubilee is one of the state’s most recognizable traditions, inspired by Mark Twain’s short story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. Each year, competitors gather in Angels Camp to see which frog can leap the farthest in three jumps.
For the Silveira family, the event has become part of who they are. For nearly seven decades, generations of the family have competed as the Gustine Frog Team, building a reputation through years of wins, family memories and national attention. Their story has been featured in a Netflix documentary episode, and past victories have brought appearances on The Tonight Show.
While this year’s win was another exciting moment, the day also marked a milestone for the next generation.
Silveira’s 6-year-old daughter, Charlotte, competed for the first time in front of a packed crowd. Despite the pressure of the stage and the full bleachers, she stayed calm, competed strong and qualified for the finals.
“I was so proud of my mini me,” Silveira said. “Her first time jumping at 6 years old and she qualified for the finals. The bleachers were packed this year, and she didn’t bat an eye.”
He also shared a proud message for his daughter after her debut.
“Dad’s proud of you, Miss Charlotte,” he said.
Charlotte was not the only young member of the family helping carry on the Gustine Frog Team tradition. Silveira praised his nephews Logan, Wyatt and Henry, who also competed and qualified for the finals.
“Also proud of my nephews Logan, Wyatt and Henry,” he said. “They gave it their all and qualified for finals as well.”
Though the Frog Jumping Jubilee is filled with humor, cheers and small-town charm, the competition itself takes patience, timing and experience. Frog jockeys must encourage their frogs to jump without forcing them, making every movement and moment on stage important.
For the Silveira family, seeing the younger generation step onto the stage — and succeed — made this year’s event even more meaningful. Charlotte, Logan, Wyatt and Henry helped show that the family tradition is still leaping forward.
The Gustine Frog Team’s continued success is also a point of pride for the community. For 68 years, the Silveira family has represented Gustine at the historic Jubilee, keeping their hometown connected to a California tradition known across the state and beyond.
As the family celebrates another win, Silveira is already looking ahead.
“Let’s take first again next year, Gustine,” he said.
For the Silveira family, the story is bigger than frogs and trophies. It is about family, tradition and hometown pride that continues to jump from one generation to the next.
