On May 2, the Orestimba High Coed tennis team accomplished two feats that seemed improbable just a couple weeks prior.
Nearly 24 hours before, the Warriors won its opening round matchup against Delhi High in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Coed Tennis playoffs. The team nearly didn’t qualify for the postseason, having to win its final three matches of the regular season, including a decisive 5-4 win against River Islands High.
With Mirella Fregoso and Sofiah Ramirez matching up against Ripon High to decide the winner of the girls doubles bracket in the Trans-Valley League Tournament, it was only poetic for Orestimba to show up when it mattered the most, winning the tournament through three sets.
Not only were both players crowned as the best in TVL, but qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Coed Tennis Tournament. However, the tournament took place at the same time as the school’s senior trip, an opportunity that soon-to-be graduates relish.
Having to pick between the two, Fregoso and Ramirez opted out of the Southern California trip to compete for a final time.
While others may choose the opposite, It’s safe to say it worked out. The duo was crowned as the best in the section last week, putting the final stamp on their four-year tenure with the program.
After easily handling their first three matchups, the Warriors were once up against TVL rival, Ripon, in the finals. Given how the matchup ended nearly three weeks before, it was going to be anything but one sided.
After losing the opening set, the duo responded with a critical 7-6 win (3) to force a final set. In the match to conclude their high school run, Fregoso and Ramirez ended it with an emphatic 6-2 win.
For head coach Nolan Osborn, the section win was the finishing touch on a prominent season.
“Proud of everyone on my team, proud of all my seniors [for the] dedication they put in,” Osborn said.
