MERCED COUNTY — The Merced County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a recent wave of scam calls from individuals falsely claiming to be department staff.

According to reports, the callers are telling residents they have an active warrant and must take immediate action, often demanding payment or personal information over the phone.

“These calls are fraudulent,” the department stated. “Our staff will never notify you of a warrant, request payment, or ask for personal details over the phone.”

Officials emphasized that legitimate warrants are not communicated by phone and urged residents to remain vigilant. Anyone receiving a suspicious call is encouraged to report it directly to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.
