The Gustine Old-Fashioned Christmas Downtown, held on Nov. 30, proved to be a magical night filled with laughter, community spirit, and heartfelt memories as residents gathered to celebrate the season and honor the legacy of Fred Schoppet, Westside’s beloved Santa Claus.

From the festive decorations to the mouthwatering aroma of delicious food, the event was a sensory delight for all who attended. Vendors lined Main Street, offering everything from handcrafted ornaments to steaming cups of hot cocoa, while children enjoyed games, crafts, and a chance to meet Santa Claus.

“This year’s event was nothing short of amazing,” said Zenny Rodrigues from Gustine. “Fred’s spirit was everywhere tonight, from the kids laughing and playing to the tree lighting itself. It was the perfect way to honor him and kick off the holiday season.”

The evening’s highlight came when Westside 4H members lit the town’s towering Christmas tree in Fred’s honor. The moment was met with cheers and applause from the crowd, with many attendees reflecting on the importance of the tribute.

“Seeing the tree light up was so emotional,” shared Marchus Finch, a friend of Fred Schoppet. “It reminded us all of Fred’s incredible love for this community and his passion for making Christmas magical for everyone, especially the kids. He would have loved this.”

The event also brought families together to enjoy a wide variety of delicious food from local vendors and from local businesses.

“The food was incredible,” said Maria Torres, a Gustine resident who attended with her family. “We tried a little bit of everything, and the kids couldn’t get enough of the hot chocolate and cookies. It was such a fun night!”

Children were at the heart of the event, echoing Fred’s love for creating joyful experiences for youth. Many shared their favorite parts of the night:

“I loved riding the fire truck,” said 8-year-old Sophia Ramirez.

“Meeting Santa was the best. I told him I want a remote-control car for Christmas,” added 6-year-old Lucas Hernandez.

“The tree was so pretty, and I got to make an ornament for my mom,” said 10-year-old Mia Johnson.

In addition to the games and activities, the sense of community was heightened. Santa Nella resident Lisa Carter remarked, “Events like this remind me why Gustine is such a special place. Everyone comes together to celebrate and support each other. You can really feel the love here.”

The new 8-foot Santa statue purchased in Fred’s memory stood tall beside the tree, serving as a poignant reminder of his legacy. Many attendees paused to take photos and reflect on his contributions to the community.

“Fred may no longer be with us, but his spirit shines through in events like this,” said Michael Rodriguez, Gustine resident. “It’s incredible to see so many people come out to honor him and keep his memory alive.”

As the night came to a close, children carried their prizes and crafts home, and the glow of the Christmas tree illuminated Main Street, leaving attendees filled with holiday cheer.

With laughter in the air, full stomachs, and hearts filled with joy, the Gustine Old-Fashioned Christmas Downtown was a resounding success, leaving the community eager to come together again next year. For one night, Fred Schoppet’s legacy of kindness, generosity, and holiday magic was alive in every twinkling light and smiling face.
