The filing period for those seeking to serve the community of Newman, whether through the city council or the school district, opened on July 15.
The Nov. 5 election will see Newman residents voting for mayor, two members of the city council and the city treasurer. The Newman Crows Landing Unified School District Board will have three seats up for election – Area 1, 3 and 4.
The filing period for the Nov. 5 election opened on July 15 and closes on Aug. 9, unless the current incumbent opts to not seek re-election. In those cases the filing period is extended to 5 p.m. on Aug. 14.
Candidates for city positions file with the city clerk. Candidates are strongly encouraged to call 209-862-3725, Option 5 to make an appointment for candidate filing. Nomination papers will be available and shall be filed at City Hall, 938 Fresno Street, Newman, from 8:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
If no one, or only one person, is nominated for any elected office, appointment to such elective office may be made as prescribed by California Elections Code Section 10229.
The Newman city positions have already generated interest among the incumbents and newcomers alike.
Current Mayor Casey Graham took out papers seeking re-election on July 15, and filed them on July 17, according to the city’s website. No other candidates for mayor have filed, as of Monday afternoon.
Candidates seeking a spot on the city council are: Gisel Pimentel, Hugh Antonio Costa, Matthew Harden, Laroy McDonald (incumbent) and Richard H. Jesse. The seat formerly held by John Pimentel is currently vacant.
The only candidate so far to file papers seeking the City Treasurer position is Mary M. Moore, who is the incumbent.
For the NCLUSD election Maribel Cerutti has filed papers for Area 1 and Matthew Harden has filed papers for Area 4.
